Take a Breather

As I clambered up the steep path
A mountain of experience
Some already finished
And much remaining
The air became thin and sparse
The angle only increased
Never a moment of downhill
And places to stop and rest
Became available less rapidly
People who I had passed years ago
Now overcame me
Hand and foot climbing by
As I took a breather
Panting quickly for air
The only antidote for someone
Who had journeyed this far
And had become this vulnerable
My voice now monotone
Because of the altitude
Could only whisper my cries
In fear of an avalanche
Causing a chain reaction
Of reliving all that I had barely escaped
The first time through
